As believers, we are called to bring our best to the Lord. Whether in worship, service, giving, or our daily walk, our efforts should reflect a heart fully devoted to God. However, amidst the pursuit of excellence, we must remember an essential truth: bringing our best should never cost us the joy of what we are bringing.
In Colossians 3:23 (NKJV), Paul exhorts us:
“And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men.”
This verse reminds us that our service is an act of worship, directed toward God. The "heartily" part is key—it means to serve with enthusiasm, passion, and joy. Bringing our best is not about striving for perfection or meeting human expectations. Instead, it’s about honoring God with a grateful and willing heart.
The danger comes when the joy of our service is overshadowed by obligation, stress, or a misplaced desire for approval. When we lose sight of why we are bringing our best, we risk turning a joyful act of worship into a burdensome task.
The story of Mary and Martha in Luke 10:38-42 provides a powerful illustration of this principle. Martha, busy with preparations, was "distracted with much serving" and frustrated that Mary was sitting at Jesus’ feet instead of helping. Jesus’ response is both gentle and profound:
"Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her." (Luke 10:41-42, NKJV)
Martha’s intentions were good; she wanted to serve Jesus. But her focus on the tasks led her to lose the joy of His presence. Mary, on the other hand, prioritized being with Jesus over doing for Jesus. This story reminds us that our service should flow from a place of joy and connection with God, not from anxiety or duty.
In 2 Corinthians 9:7 (NKJV), Paul writes:
“So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver.”
This principle applies not just to financial giving but to every area of our lives. When we bring our best, it should be with a cheerful heart. Joy comes from knowing that our efforts, no matter how small or imperfect, are pleasing to God when offered with love and sincerity.
At Union Grove, we often speak of bringing our best to God—whether in worship, ministry, or outreach. Yet we also emphasize the importance of doing so with joy. When our service becomes a source of stress or resentment, we need to step back and realign our hearts with the "why" behind what we do.
Imagine a church where every member serves with joy. At Union Grove, this is the culture we strive to cultivate. When we bring our best with joy, it transforms our ministry. Our worship becomes more vibrant, our service more effective, and our relationships more meaningful.
The Psalmist declares:
“Serve the Lord with gladness; Come before His presence with singing.” (Psalm 100:2, NKJV)
This is the vision for Union Grove. We are not just a church that serves; we are a church that serves with gladness. We bring our best not out of obligation but out of overflowing gratitude for all that God has done.
As we continue to grow and serve together, let’s make it our aim to bring our best without losing our joy. If you’ve found yourself feeling weary or burdened in your service, take a moment to realign your heart. Ask God to restore the joy of your salvation (Psalm 51:12) and to help you serve with gladness.
Let’s remember: bringing our best is not about perfection. It’s about a heart of gratitude, a spirit of joy, and a desire to honor God in all we do. When we bring our best with joy, we reflect the goodness and glory of the One we serve.
